Picking Knits

black knit tee shirts gown (Cashmerette Turner)

So a few Saturdays ago, I woke up with one burning idea: I needed to hack the Cashmerette Turner gown to have a six-gore skirt with patch-ish pockets.

Why? No earthly idea. If it were the beforetimes, I’d at least have the reason of regular air travel, however at this point I haven’t been on a airplane because February of 2020. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is my second shot at the Turner—I made a wearable muslin a while back just to kick the tires, so to speak. It was so simple to put together (and in shape so well, with very little adjustments) that I believed “huh, exactly how can I make this much more difficult?”

But even splitting up the skirt as well as adding on-gore pockets can’t overcomplicate the Turner. It’s SUCH a quick sew—I believe I spent much more time winding stretch thread on bobbins as well as remembering exactly how to utilize my twin needle configuration than I did really putting it together. It certainly took me much more time to trace as well as hack the pattern than it did to build this dress!

This material is thick (think old-style Hanes Beefy-T, heavier than jersey) knit cotton with some lycra or spandex in it; it has a good recovery. (It was on super-sale at Cali Fabrics, so of program it’s not offered anymore.) There are some drag lines in the photo above, however that’s mainly since my gown type is a bit little now (it broke as well as is no longer adjustable, or, rather, I am much more adjustable than it is, although over a longer time period).

When I make this once again (and I most likely will, if I can discover the best material … it would be adorable in a lightweight sweatshirting which I’m quite sure I already have in my stash) I have some even more hacks … the pockets would be much better if they started a bit higher on the inner edge, or I may play with having them integrated into the gore instead of on top. I implied to strengthen the side seams along the pocket seams with some remove elastic, however I ran out after the waistband, so it will have to wait up until I purchase some more. The skirt might likewise be shortened by a few inches (I don’t mind the longer length, however I don’t truly requirement it, either).

The heavy knit implies it’s not extremely staticky (my primary grievance about jersey knit dresses; obviously I have an electric character which results in clingy, shocky knits), as well as it hangs nicely. It’s likewise extremely comfortable (I mean, why wouldn’t it be? It’s a huge tee shirts with pockets!)

The neck binding right here is some knit binding I had that miraculously was the exact same tone

a much better look at the pocket (and the thread I didn’t clip yet)

the double-needle hem (I stiffened the hem with knit fusible interfacing cut in 2″ strips)

I certainly feel late to the ‘sewing knits is great’ party. I don’t wear a great deal of tee shirts so the gateway job of “make a customized tee” never caught my eye. as well as up until recently, I didn’t have a rotary cutting mat huge sufficient for my cutting table, so cutting knits was always fraught—I always seemed to pull them out of grain when cutting with scissors. as well as the revelation that is stretch stitching thread! (Kids, come onto my lawn, I requirement to tell you about exactly how I utilized to have to wind bobbins uphill, in the snow, both ways!)

Also, the knits offered for house stitching have gotten a great deal better, particularly for natural-fiber snobs like me. (I keep in mind walking with the material store touching knits as well as hating the scratchy, oily, slippery hand of whatever I might afford.) The prints are much better now too, she said, at the end of a publish about a ordinary black dress.
